Zucker Platschen (Sugar Cookies)

This recipe for traditional German sugar cookies was shared with me by Marie Leonards and Donna Leonards Spaetgens. Thin and crispy, these are a delightful holiday treat.

Ingredients:
1 cup real butter
2¼ cups sugar
¼ cup milk
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
4 cups flour
3 tsps baking powder
additional flour and sugar for rolling

Method:
Preheat oven to 350º F. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar. In a separate bowl, blend milk, eggs and vanilla. Mix into butter mixture. Sift flour and baking powder together. Gradually add to creamed mixture.  Separate into 4 sections.  Roll very thin on a smooth surface sprinkled with a combination of sugar and flour (use 1½ cups each). Cut into circles with a biscuit cutter or the mouth of a glass.  Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool completely. Store in airtight containers.
